SAM SCHUT - UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION

ABOUT OUR SCHOLAR -- IN HIS OWN WORDS

College has been challenging but exciting! I have had the ability to participate in a research project and even study abroad in Florianópolis, Brazil! I have been taking a diverse set of classes: everything from surfing to international management while in Brazil. I have been working towards applying to chiropractic school with the potential to start as soon as next semester!

This scholarship enabled me to buy all of the required supplies I needed for school! Everything from textbooks, to a new book bag, and even an anatomy app that helps me to study! Without this scholarship I would not have been able to be as prepared for school. I am funding my education completely on my own so luxuries like a new book bag and professional applications are a rare commodity.

My future plans have changed somewhat from when I began as a freshman. Instead of pursuing physical therapy, I have chosen chiropractic because it appears to offer more creative freedom and the possibility to have an all-encompassing, holistic practice. I intend to study at Palmer University in Iowa. I may even begin chiropractic school next fall semester (even though I am only a sophomore) and graduate in 3 and ½ years with both my bachelors and doctorate!

My best advice for applicants is to simply explain why you are truly passionate about your field of study. Danner Dental does not just choose the valedictorian; they look to an applicant's passion, drive, and vision. Reading about something someone loves is much more engaging than merely spouting off accomplishments and awards. The scholarship from Danner Dental displays a shift in thinking: from evaluating a person based on their achievements to evaluating a person based on their character.

Juliette smyers - case western reserve university

About our scholar -- in her own words

Since winning, I have been studying hard at Case Western Reserve University, running, and making lots of trips to Little Italy.

I am so busy with exams, projects, and labs, and it is nice to know that I don't have to worry as much about paying for school on top of it all. In this way, the Danner Dental Scholarship helped me through my first semester. It also helped to remind me when things got especially difficult that there are people who support me and believe in my ability to do well. In the future, I plan to become a doctor or dentist, and my ultimate goal is to help make the world a little brighter by improving my community in any way I can.

The best advice I can give to applicants and anyone heading off to college is to take a break from stressing about the future and reward yourself once in a while, whether it's with junk food or an episode of a favorite tv show--you deserve it!

marissa baum - university of cincinnati

about our scholar - in her own words

Since winning the scholarship from Danner Dental, I graduated high school and went on to college. I graduated from Hoover High School in North Canton, OH in 2006. I then went to University of Cincinnati and got my Bachelors in Health Sciences on a Pre-med track. I graduated with my bachelors in 2010.

At that time I took almost a year off to get some experience to apply to PA school and worked at a physical therapy clinic in North Canton working as a personal trainer/physical therapy aid. I started PA school in May of 2011 at University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL and graduated with my Masters in Physician Assistant Studies/Health Sciences in 2013.
The Danner Dental Scholarship helped me with things you don’t realize cost money aside from tuition, like room and board, books, and food. Books in college are very expensive, even used, so any amount helps.

I am currently living in Cincinnati, OH and working at a level I trauma center hospital, University of Cincinnati Medical Center. I am a Physician Assistant working in trauma orthopedics and have been in this position for 5 years now. I have transitioned to working with only one physician now who specializes in traumatic limb deformities.  I have a busy work schedule, but still get to enjoy time outside of work with my boyfriend and two fur babies.

shelly douglas - the ohio state university

About our scholar - in her own words

Since winning the Danner Dental Scholarship, I have completed three semesters at The Ohio State University, and am in the middle of my fourth right now! I am a second year Environmental Policy and Decision Making major with a specialization in Environmental and Social Justice (a mouth full, I know!).

I am involved in Undergraduate Student Government on the sustainability committee, and I also write policy for student body presidential campaigns. My favorite involvement at Ohio State, however, is being a small group coordinator for CHAARG. CHAARG stands for Changing Health, Attitudes and Actions to Recreate Girls, and we meet weekly to check out workout studios around Columbus, find new healthy eats and empower each other to find our inner strength and confidence.

During my first year, I was completely blind-sided by how expensive textbooks and access codes were. For the required GE courses, it's mandatory to get these materials, so the Danner Dental Scholarship took a lot of weight off my shoulders when getting the money together. Your first year should be spent joining student orgs, making new friends and exploring the city, not worrying about financial burdens.

Before I finish my time as an undergrad at Ohio State, I hope to land a summer internship with the Ohio EPA. This summer, I have the opportunity to travel to Thailand and Laos with GIVE Volunteers to teach local children English, develop sustainable farming and lifestyle practices and learn the culture of native communities. After graduation, I hope to have a job with an environmental consulting firm, non-profit or agency to do my part in protecting the planet from big businesses and climate change.

As for my favorite things about Ohio State, you can't beat being a 10 minute bus ride away from the Short North and Downtown. If you ever feel like getting off campus, there are so many things to do within the city. My favorite spot in Columbus is the North Market with so many local vendors, and of course, Jeni's Ice Cream! There is also such a range of interesting classes to take for electives, such as my favorite class Slavic Vampires. My advice for future applicants is to show your passions in anything you apply for in the coming months. Surely, most applicants have good grades and school involvement, but what will set you apart is your passions in life and goals for your future.
